Frequently Asked Questions

What is Egg Basket?

The Egg Basket eCommerce framework is a search engine optimised, highly configurable, powerful tool for selling online. It's essentially a pre-built, fully functional online store ready to be used as-is or built upon further with bespoke functionality.

Who should use Egg Basket?

Just about any web developer can work with our PHP eCommerce framework, and designers or front-end developers can build new responsive themes without having to understand what's happening under the hood.

Why should I choose Egg Basket?

Egg Basket has been built from the ground up to be intuitive both for end users and for developers. Out of the box you get a responsive wireframe and flexible layout engine for designers and front-end developers to build themes without the need to understand anything more complicated. Developers get easy to follow, well written code, a powerful plugin system, and a step by step usage_guide. When a site is complete, the shop owner gets an easy to use administration panel that isn't bloated with developer settings. What's more, the whole system has been built around search engine optimisation techniques so your online marketing gets a kick start.

When will updates be released?

We're constantly working to improve Egg Basket and try to release new versions often, but there's no set schedule at the moment.

Do I have to pay for it?

As of version 1.9, Egg Basket is completely free, released under the GNU GPL.

What kind of server do I need?

Egg Basket requires a PHP 5 server, ideally running Apache with mod_rewrite and mod_negotiation for friendly urls. It also works on IIS servers running PHP as an ASAPI module. It expects MySQL 5 as a database engine, but our database wrapper functions can be easily amended so long as your engine supports standard SQL syntax. Various other freely available and usually pre-installed PHP modules may also be required for certain functionality, including the GD libraries.

What exactly am I allowed to do with Egg Basket?

Just about anything, really. Egg Basket is designed to be an egg, i.e. the starting point for your online store. Our intention is that you build up from the core framework, either using plugins or your own bespoke changes. If you do something innovative we'd love to hear about it.

How do I get support?

Egg Basket is shipped with a usage guide detailing exactly how to set the framework up and which files to start with as a developer. If you need further assistance please do get in touch, or post to development communities such as Stack Overflow.

Various PHP modules may also be required for certain functionality,
such as the GD libraries for thumbnail generation. All modules, libraries and software
required by Egg Basket are freely available.
